Our small interview with a crafts deviant
This time that is
Name: Derek Moore
Age: older
Residence: Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
Art education: Diploma in fine arts from Langara College (in Vancouver) then transferred to the Alberta College of Art and Design (in Calgary, AB) to finish a BFA.
Current profession: For the last two years, since my graduation, I have been a full-time potter. But it has been quite a struggle. After having a wealth of equipment and tools at ones disposal as a student it was a quick realization as to how equipment poor one is when they leave. I managed to find a wheel and a small kiln and I began making what I call 'functional' pottery to sell at mostly farmers markets and craft fairs while I collected the equipment needed to make the pots here on diaviantART. But at this point it looks like I will be heading back to find work with a more steady paycheck and focus on making the pieces I love.

When/where/how did you discover deviantART?
I was a STUMBLER and noticed that a lot of deviantART sites kept coming up. Later I found out it wasn't just 2D artists so here I am.
What inspires you to post your artwork on deviantART?
I love the feedback. While in school you’re constantly surrounded by your peers and critiques are commonplace, but when school finishes, and even more so if you move away or back home, that opportunity for feedback diminishes. I miss that but I think I may have found a great substitute here on deviantART.
Where do you find inspiration?
Lately it is in architecture. I love the fact that we now have buildings that are flamboyant and externally, visually interesting yet still function as they are meant to. I think that is what I am trying to achieve with my pots. They are all just containers.
What is your favourite deviation from your gallery and why?
Probably the ‘Attitude Adjusted Wine’ because it is the newest. I love the fact that a simple adjustment, a placement of a part at a different angle, can change the entire feel of the pot.
Which artisan crafts deviant do you look up to and why?
Too many to mention. I love to see all the different things that are created that I couldn’t do. I love how different people using the same materials and the same tools, can come away with completely different outcomes. That is what creativity is all about.
Tips and tricks of the trade! Tips that you picked up from your own experience and you find useful?
I went to a workshop with Clary Illian who said she doesn’t like to look at other potters or ceramic trade magazines for fear of ‘being influenced.’ I loved that. Truthfully, if you want to make interesting work look outside your field for inspiration.
Do you think you will ever reach the top of your creativity?
No. I think that one becomes stagnant when they take it too seriously and stop looking outside. At this point my biggest concern is staying focused.
Anything else you would like to include?
Thanks

Studio Photography
Studio photography is easy because you can get exactly what you want but for those reasons Studio photography is hard as you can get exactly what you want. Soft light, hard light, hair light, background. Everything is under your control.
A lot of people claim to not use a studio when they set up their picture in their kitchen with the use of paper and other material. Personally I really don't care how you did it. As soon as you assemble an environment where you have control over lightning and background than heck you are doing "studio" I really hope people start seeing things a bit wider. It isn't professional counter amateur it is taking pi
